Wine Wednesday: The Urban Winery of Silver Spring

2015-07-16 18.25.12

I love finding new wines, new wine bars and places to hang out and drink wine. Through Ian Glispy with Mighty Hip.com, I found out about The Urban Winery of Silver Spring. A small batch wine bar in the heart of Downtown Silver Spring.

The family that owns Urban Winery has been making wine as a hobby since the 70s, but in recent years have started turning their hobby into a business opening 2015-07-16 17.30.21the wine bar in 2015. They pride themselves on the quality wine they create and many of these wines were created with little to no sulfites, using a traditional preservation method they still use today.

I had an opportunity to visit the Urban Winery on a Thursday evening and instantly fell in love with the rustic homey feel. The wine list includes the small batch varietals they create and a few other local wines. All can be purchased by the glass for about $6 to $10 per glass or by the bottle from $18 to $25 per bottle. The wine tasting flight cost $12.00, which is what I did the day I went.

I tasted and enjoyed all of the following:

Green Apple Riesling

Blueberry Pinot Noir

White Cranberry Pinot Grigio <<<< my favorite

Sauvignon Blanc

Silver Spring Red

I had not intended to test the only the sweets but that is what ended up happening due to some availability issues, the Cabernet Franc is their bestselling red was sold out; which is an awesome thing for the winery but sadness for the wine taster who wanted to try it. I’ve heard that they are making a peach sangria, I can’t wait to taste that.

For dinner I had the Greek Lamb Meatballs with pita bread and crème brulee for desert. Every craving I had before I got there was satisfied when I left that e2015-07-16 17.47.21vening.
